Winter Anime 2014 Genius Compendium

The Winter Anime Season Has Arrived. This Pretty Much Means Me Ranking A Ton Of New Anime And Pretty Much Being Dead Wrong By The Time February Rolls Around. Let's Get This Started!

Now, for those of you who don't know how my Compendiums work, it's simple: I only rank all of the new TV anime that's making their debut this Winter. No Sequels (*looks at Silver Spoon and Chuu2Koi2*). No already existing franchises, or I guess long running franchises (*Looks at Saki, Seitokai Yakuindomo*). No Shorts (*looks at Pupipo, Strange +*). And of course, no films or OVAs. It just makes everything easy for me/I get to shine all the new faces in anime. For better or for worse. So, you get how things work? Then I better get started!

Advanced Dungeons and 2014 Winter Season Preview

I miss snow.

Belated Edit:

Day Three Hundred and Sixty-three

Samurai Champloo was an intriguing experiment. I mentioned, way back when I , that it was a tremendously good mix of style, music, and action... and its English dub was fairly superior to most other anime. That recommendation still holds most of its water, I think, though it's a little shaky this time around.

I say that because this particular episode, Bogus Booty, has a sing-song intro that doesn't translate well in the English dub. The style that they try and emulate from the original just can't be done with our sentence structure and pronunciation, so it ends up being a somewhat sad and definitely pale imitation. Luckily, it's only the first minute or so of the episode, so its quickly dismissed, but I can see where someone just randomly coming to it might be turned off from the whole thing. Not high odds that it would happen that way as Bogus Booty is the fifteenth episode of the series, but it might happen.

Winter 2013/4 Season Expectations and Write-ups

A new season is coming up, so once more I look at the incoming listing of pain and suffer anime and choose what to watch next. The list will cover how likely and what form of write-up I'll give each show, and how interested I am in it currently. I mostly went by random internet chatter, , and the , I don't really watch previews, which bit me in the ass with NouCome/Yuushibu last season, so let's hope we don't get a repeat this season.

I'll give my current opinion on the shows that carry over. Show-names with a strike-through means I don't plan to pick the show up, but wanted to discuss it. Interest scale is out of 3 stars.

12 Days of Anime #2

Tomorrow I'm going to post the anime moment that had left the deepest impression upon me this past year. I've already written of 10 moments, but here are nine more moments that I thought merited a paragraph each, of an exciting, impactful or "other" moment in my anime-related life from the past year. Why nine? Because tomorrow is the tenth, the big one (Order of following moments is arbitrary).

Moments will be included for: Sword Art Online, Samurai Champloo, Oreimo, Little Witch Academia, Suisei no Gargantia, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Valvrave the Liberator, ToraDora!, and Kyoukai no Kanata.

The Midseason is Almost Here

It used to be that the start of the TV midseason in January was for the premieres of the second-stringers, new shows that weren't good enough to premiere in the fall, and the return of existing ones that were solid but unspectacular performers. A few familiar titles might be held back to plug in expected holes in a network's schedule, and a few shows might be switched to different time slots, but there was nothing really big to look forward to.

Well, cable content changed all that with its vastly different year-round scheduling, and the rise of foreign television and the web-content have only made the change more pronounced. Now there's a lot of new television to look forward to each January, and this year looks like it's going to get off to a big start. Lots of new shows and lots of returing ones will hit the airwaves soon, giving February's Sochi Winter Olympics some serious competition for eyeballs. Here's a quick rundown of some of the most anticipated shows coming (back) our way.

Serial expermental Lain and Michiko to Hatchin

During Thanksgiving i did promise that i was going to rewatch Lain because i did plan to review it.I watched it. I watch the Sub, I didn't watch it dub this time.Well I went in it thinking that it will give me the same philosophical impact that it did when i first watch the dub when i was 13 years old which it did but, somehow this time it left a void. A unexpected void that took me kinda two to three days to get over.Lain takes places in the future or the distance future butthe whole center around Lain is internet. When i first saw Lain it was when there was STILL a G4 and when G4 still showed anime. I usuallywould stay up late to watch it.Once it did in when i first saw it it left this Philosophical empact in me at the time that it stayed with me for fuck a decade. For this to be a show made back when the Cyber punk era was phasing out(1998-2005) in anime most of the dialog in this show is still paramount even today. "No matter where you go..Everyone is connected" from lain of the wired in episode 2 and when you think about it now. With all these smart phones, computers, apps, ect its like no mater where you go you are always connected.

Please for the love of god watch this show! you will know what i mean. I mean you might have a different view from me but please check this show out. To me this was Yoshitoshi ABe top work.

#27: ENDINGS

Endings are the hardest.

Some of my favorite endings are the ones that end in happy endings. Very cliche, I know, but it's just knowing that everything is going to be okay for these characters that I have attached myself to. Of the pieces we read in class, I think Purple Hibiscus had a decent ending. The person who had been causing all of the problems that the main characters faced was out of the picture, Kambili had grown into a mature young woman, and Jaja was going to be getting out of prison. All in all, it is a pretty good ending for the all the characters I liked, except for Aunty Ifeoma and her family who were rather unhappy in America. However, there was too much uncertainty in that ending for it to be perfect; moreover, I would have liked to have seen Jaja actually leave the prison with his family that day. There was too much that could happen in between where the book left off and until Jaja got out of prison; he could have been shanked in his sleep or died from starvation. I would have liked to know how that ended.

Winter 2014 Anime Preview

Hey all, it's season preview time again - doesn't time fly!?Anyway this upcoming Winter season is surprisingly decent looking, which is a good thing since it's cold and I don't want to go outside. These days it feels like the quality shows are being more evenly spread out over the year, rather than being clustered into the Spring & Autumn seasons - those seasons are still bigger, but Summer & Winter are definitely much more packed now than they were in the past.Hopefully the trend continues!

Right on to the preview then~!

Top 100 Characters in Anime

It's about that time.As you all know I am an anime fanatic.I think anime expresses some of the most creative and innovative characters and stories that can be overly exaggerated at times but highly entertaining. It is only natural that I find characters whom I find interesting.

This is my list of a hundred characters in anime.Note: this list will not reflect completely from my top ten of a certain anime and that this list will not be in any specific order. This list may be updated, changed, or add to in the future.

Animate! The Sci-Fi Fanatic BIG 20: Anime

What better way to promote and shine a light on anime than to present to you anime animated.

Can you think of a better way to taste the possibilities?

Fall 2013 Anime Mid-Season Impressions (Part 2/2, L-V)

So, another season of anime reached its half-point and it's time to watch my mid-season impressions, where I talk a bit of the show and rate it. This part's shows have some really catchy OPs/EDs, so you'll get more of them.

Due to how many shows I have to cover (15), I've cut them into two halves, sorted alphabetically. The shows within each episode are sorted roughly by excitement generated within me or how good they are. I've also bolded in the following lines what shows I'll recommend people without reservations.

Night Raid 1931 Review (Japanese)

I love the 1920s-1930s. Granted it's more for the smooth jazz, vaudeville, and those flapper girls but it's still my favorite decade. Looking at the same decade from a different country seems like a really interesting idea right? Well... I'm not so sure about this one...

Night Raid 1931 is an original 13 episode Action/Sci-Fi series from A-1 Pictures and Director Jun Matsumoto for the Spring 2010 season. Three additional OVA episodes from the same Director and Studio were released later that year. As of this review, it is licensed by Sentai Filmworks (US) and Siren Visual (AUS). It is also available for legal streaming on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Anime Network with Hulu and AN having the additional OVA episodes.

Halloween Nerdery

I love Halloween. This year I decided to go as Ed from the anime Cowboy Bebop, and of course Odo went as Ein the data dog! He looks so sleepy in these photos

I used to love anime when I was in my preteens to early teens. I watched some pretty terrible shows back then, so now I'm really picky about the anime I watch today, and I look at the genre with more of a critical eye than I did before. Cowboy Bebop is one of the few I still love. It was my favorite when I was younger, and I used to stay up late every Saturday night to watch it (it came on around 1am if I remember correctly). The series is only 26 episodes long. It's concise, stylish, has great music, and has an excellent story. It can be problematic at times, but I think it's one of the best anime series out there. Beyond Cowboy Bebop, I love pretty much every Miyazaki film ever made, plus a few select series like Mushishi and Samurai Champloo.

Back on the Envelope: Kill La Kill Episode 2

Like everyone else cool on the anisphere (look at that peer pressure), I'm watching Kill la Kill this season. So I thought I'd chip in my two cents on some stuff in episode 2.

I also wanted to showcase my newfound discovery of the joy of screenshots instead of Google image search!

Ninja life skills: 7 tips to make learning Japanese that little bit easier

Posted: 18 Oct 2013 05:53 AM PDT

Despite its apparent difficulty, Japanese is fast becoming one of the world's most desirable languages to learn, with more and more Westerners studying it every day. Eventually, though, we all hit a wall with our studies and feel like we're not making any progress. The books you threw yourself into with such enthusiasm to begin with start to become a chore to open, the army of kanji characters you have yet to study stare back at you with mocking disdain, and despite all the hours you put in you still can't quite keep up with that anime you were determined to watch without subtitles. It happens to the best of us, but there are ways to break out of this rut, not to mention rekindle that love for studying Japanese, or any other language for that matter.

Space Dandy To Air on Toonami

A brand-new anime series headed straight to Toonami? Without months or maybe even years of delay between its Japanese and American release? Please tell me this isn't a dream.

According to , this isn't our collective imaginations at work. The upcoming Space Dandy anime series (from Studio BONES and Shinichiro Watanabe, who you might recognize as the director of some humble little series like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo) will premiere on Cartoon Network JANUARY 4TH, 2014 AT 11:30 PM. According to their post, this will mean that the show is premiering in North America before it does in Japan. Seriously? How can you not be excited to hear that? It's about time we got something before our Japanese friends. This almost makes me a little less bitter about all the manga I'll never get to read and all the otome titles I'll never get to playokay, maybe not. But it helps.

Great Anime

I realized yesterday that its been a while since I've seen really good anime.Kamisama no inai nichiyoubi was pretty good, but it wasn't epic the way I had hoped.Shingeki no kyoujin is.But the problem is, as good as the plot may be, I discovered the manga first, and so I knew what was going to happen the whole season. The animation and framing is enjoyable though.Last year katanagatari, anohana were the best ones I saw that I can remember off the top of my head. But a lot of what I watch isnt that memorable.Watching new anime as it comes out is directly exploring, which is good.I watch the raws for those, so I get japanese practice out of it regardless. But there are 25~ series at least, every season. Some of them are continuations, but the rest are new.Ive watched and dumped quite a few this month already. As time passes, it gets easier to tell which ones were good and which ones weren't worth watching. To a point.Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann scored a 7.8 on one sight, but I thought it was a 9.There are anime that fill certain slots in an otaku's life.My generation had the sailor moon thing, now its precure, maybe?.hack is now SAO.You watch one, and any after it seem the same, because you saw that one first. This is usually where ratings and my impressions dont match up. That 3 episode rule, sometimes its good, but I believe that in the first episode, you can get a feel for the whole thing.Madoka Magica doesnt go all dark until the third episode, but in the first one someones trying to kill off the mascot, and the feeling is already there.Samurai Champloo, 1 episode was enough. Some, the first episode is the best one.Ga Rei Zero had an awesome first one.The series was pretty good, but the beginning tops the whole season.I wish I didnt know what was going to happen when I watched it though.Thats the other thing.I have a sort of neurosis about which way I experience a series, because once you know the plot, theres no going back.Watch a crappy anime, and when you switch to the manga it makes it harder to read sometimes.Though, if you insist on watching the junk one, do it first.Like, dragon ball legends, that live action, probably isnt as bad if you dont know what dragon ball is.

Walkure Romanze and Too Many Women in Anime

A few days ago, I watched the preview to a new fanservicey show titled Walkure Romanze. It must be admitted that seeing bevies of knightly beauties performing martial exercises and stretching afforded pleasure to my eyes.Actually, the fact that they were knights was not apparent until I saw the women jousting in full plate later in the preview.Until two other thoughts intruded themselves upon me, I contemplated adding this show to my watch list. But, these two thoughts killed any desire for me to watch this show: 1) Could they not have animated Tactics Ogre, Vinland Saga, Gunka no Baltzar, or any other good war or medieval manga instead? Or remade Ivanhoe, Le Morte D'Arthur,Parzival, The Mabinogeoon, any other medieval romance, or a viking saga into an anime? And 2) Why do Japanese shows increasingly or even the greater proportion of the time place girls in roles meant originally for men?

Here are two of the beauties.

Samurai Flamenco

Samurai Flamenco is perfect for Noitamina: aimed at adults, creative, great characters, and really well written. I mean, Silver Spoon and Galilei Donna were nice and all, but this is going to be the next really big hit from the timeslot again after Psycho Pass.

There are two reasons why this show stands out. First of all is the characters: they are amazing. Pretty much the best of the season along with Kyousogiga. I can't really say which are better at this point because both series have completely different ways in which they use their characters, but the chemistry between them is just amazing. Every character works well together.

Anime Season Begins

Well, I'm watching a lot of shows this season, even more than last season, about 20. So I'm going to split this post into two parts, the first will go live today, and the second will likely go live in a couple of days. I will not post this sort of list every week, certainly not for this number of shows. I intend to cut down the amount of shows I'm watching to 10-12 by next week or the week after, to leave me more time for other things.

There will be spoilers of episode 1-2 of the shows discussed, but that's part of the premise, honestly.

My Top 50 Anime

Well it's been nearly two years since I last updated my Top 50 Anime list - a ridiculous amount of time to leave it untouched really.I decided to completely redo the list, it is remarkable how you can completely change your mind about a show after a while - some shows went up in my estimation, some went down and I had two years worth of new shows to cram in somewhere too!But I did it and now

But I didn't want to lose some of the entries so here's what's out and what's in.

Space Dandy coming 2014

We interrupt you regularly scheduled program for a post about an upcoming anime. Coming in January of 2014 Bones, The studio behind Kids on the Slope, Eureka Seven and Darker than Black will bring us the newest work of Shinichrio Watanabe (the director of Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Macross Plus). But before that they've released a music video featuring the show's main theme by Yasuyuki Okamura. While little of the plot is known at this time I think thesets up the series as a whole; "Space Dandy is a dandy guy in space."

This is looking to be another great anime from Watanabe.

Autumn 2013 Anime Preview

I'm back bitches~!I have been back in the warm embrace of my PC & wonderful internet connection for three weeks now - it's been a strange experience. For a start Ireland feels bloody tiny, but the crap public transport means that I am sorely missing not having a car.I am pretty much bankrupt thanks to my trip (which was loads of fun) so had a frantic first week home of job searching.Thankfully I got a temporary 2 month contract to tide me over for a while .which meant very little time being a NEET and catching up on things.

Being the obsessive fan I am, I did manage to keep up with a choice selection of shows from the seasons I was AWOL, but still have a lengthy list of things I want to check out - will get round to them eventually. But anyhoo, you're here for the Autumn Preview, so lets get cracking! (Can't tell you how much I missed doing these things - exhausting, but satisfying~!)

Anime

Last year around this time I started watching anime. I started out with Dragon Ball Z. It randomly happened one night I got home from a football game and was bored and I remembered it from my childhood and decided to get back into it. I got really into it some nights watching twenty episodes a night. I eventually finished the series and it was pretty good but it was really slow and got boring at some points but overall it was a very good anime. After I finished that I began Naruto and finished that and started Naruto Shippuden. I have just caught up with the subbed episodes and I think I'm going to start reading the manga. A manga is pretty much a Japanese comic. I like Naruto Shippuden because it is way faster than Dragon Ball Z. Also lately I have been watching Rurouni Kenshin. It is about a Samurai that used to be a killer but now has a reverse blade because he doesn't want to harm anyone. Also the other night I started watching Samurai Champloo.HERE ARE SOME PICTURES OF THE ANIMES.DRAGON BALL ZNARUTONARUTO SHIPPUDENKENSHINSAMURAI CHAMPLOO

Top Five TV Series For Getting Into Anime

Anime. It seems interesting to many folks, but then they get turned off by its reputation for creepy juvenile fantasy. And that's really too bad, because the genre has a lot to offer if you know where to look. Like many folks, my first introduction to the anime genre was via popular films by(, , etc.) and then later with lesser films such as or film adaptations of TV series. But when I first tried to expand my awareness of the anime genre into the realm of television, I was immediately struck by how many of the highly-recommended shows seemed to be rather childish and really struggled to compete with live-action sci-fi/fantasy for my interest. Was anime simply not for me? I didn't want to write off an entire genre of film, and so I continued sorting through the dross until I was able to identify the sort of anime series that I actually liked. This list is intended for casual viewers who find themselves in a similar position.

The difficulty with coming up with Top 5 lists is that they are often so subjective. Elements that can make a show a favorite can also be deal-breakers for other viewers. Since I came at this list from the perspective of a sci-fi fan rather than an anime-lover per se, I'm quite sure that some of my reasons for excluding veteran shows will be anathema for some. For example, this list is mostly composed of newer shows since I don't feel that the animation and characterization of many older anime has aged well (like /). Cue vitriol.

Michiko & Hatchin

I went into Michiko & Hatchin (AKA Michiko to Hatchin, Michiko e Hatchin) not knowing much about it,it got my attention from a few defining traits. It was the directorial debut of Saya Yamamoto, who'd previously had a hand in everything from Redline to Eureka Seven, and is now becoming more well known for her Lupin the Third series The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. In addition,Michiko & Hatchin takes place in a location unique to anime, Latin America (to be more precise, a fictional country heavily based on Brazil), and has famed Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe for a "Music Producer".But these interesting features aside, is the show itself as good as it is intriguing?

Hana Morenos is a young girl who had spent her days living with an abusive foster family, until one day escaped convict Michiko Malandro burst into their house looking for her. As it turns out, Hana is the daughter ofthe man Michiko loves, Hiroshi Morenos, who Michiko is desperately searching for, despite him having been declared dead. Thinking Hana could be useful for getting close to Hiroshi, Michiko takes Hana (who soon renames herself Hatchin to accompany her new life) on a journey across the country to find the man that connects their pasts and find their happy ending.

Thoughts On: Suda 51

I want to make something clear about what these articles I write are about. First and foremost, it is not a review. If this was a review of a game that isn't out yet, I would have given a score to it and that sounds rather silly to give a game a score when it isn't even out yet. These are a series of written articles covering upcoming games, and giving my impressions of what I have seen of them, gaming topics, and other things gaming related. Now that I got that out of the way, I thought I would do an article about one of my favorite game designers, Suda 51. This is the guy who makes those crazy action games like No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, Lollipop Chainsaw, and the recently released Killer Is Dead, which will be one of my reviews in the near future. There is just something that I love about his games, even if they are not perfect all around. Let's begin, shall we?

Let's get started with Suda 51's history of being in the game industry. His actual name is Goichi Suda. The 51 is a play on his name, because "Go" means 5 and "ichi" means 1 in the Japanese language. He started out working for a developer called Human Entertainment, known for some popular games like a few Fire Pro Wrestler games, Vanguard Bandits, and the Super Famicom horror game, Clock Tower, among others. At Human Entertainment, the first games he worked on were Super Fire Pro Wrestling 3 Final Bout and Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special as a director and scenario writer. He also worked on a series of adventure horror games called Twilight Syndrome: Search, Twilight Syndrome: Investigate, and Moonlight Syndrome. None of these last three games were ever released in America. After the team at Human Entertainment disbanded, Suda 51 founded his own company called Grasshopper Manufacturer. Game-wise, this is when things got more interesting. I am going to skip a few years to the mid-2000s, because this is when Suda 51 got really noticed by the gaming community. In 2005, he released a GameCube and PlayStation 2 game known as Killer 7, an on-rails shooter kind of game with a unique artistic presentation. It was definitely a game that stood out among the games released that year. The reception was mixed, but Killer 7 became a cult classic among gamers and remains one of the many games talked about during the whole, "video games vs. art" and "sex and violence in video games" conversations. I have never played it, but if any of you have played either version of the game before, tell me what you think, and I might go find a copy of it since I am usually up for something unique. Suda 51 has made other games that were also well-known, but for the people that don't know him, I thought I would start with one of his more recognized games. Some of his earlier games that he was famous for before Killer 7 are Flower, Sun, and Rain, and The Silver Case. We didn't get the original release of those two games, but we did get a DS remake of Flower, Sun, and Rain, an adventure game that got mixed reviews when it was re-released, but was praised for its colorful themes and story. At the same time, it was criticized for its difficulty. Before we get to his more popular games, Grasshopper Manufacturer and Namco Bandai teamed up to make an action game based off of a popular and mostly well executed anime called Samurai Champloo. Now we get to the games he has worked on for the past few years. In 2008, Suda 51 released a new action game for the Wii called No More Heroes about a young man named Travis Touchdown who wants to become the number one assassin. The game was once again known for its violence and art style. It was well received with the biggest criticism concerning the camera and the very empty overworld you can travel through on your huge bike. I liked it personally, but it did have its problems. There is also a PlayStation 3 version that you can find that uses the PlayStation Move controller. Before releasing a sequel to No More Heroes, Suda 51 was the producer for a Nintendo DS RPG called Contact. It was released in 2009 and got mixed reviews. In 2010, he released a sequel to No More Heroes called No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle. The overall design of the first game was improved upon in the sequel, and some new playable characters were added in certain moments of the game. It is my favorite game out of the series, but it had some camera issues, and the first part of a certain boss fight was awful since you had to deal with the motorcycle controls in a small battle arena. In 2011, Suda 51's company teamed up with EA to release a campy horror-survival-third-person shooter game known as Shadows of the Damned for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This game had some big names besides Suda 51 behind it, like Shinji Mikami and Akira Yamaoka. Shadows of the Damned got mixed reviews, but a lot of people I have talked to who have played the game have said that they enjoyed it. Again, tell me what you all think of it and I might go out and buy a copy. 2012 brought us the quirky zombie-killing Lollipop Chainsaw for PS3 and 360, with the voice talent of Tara Strong who did voice work for many popular shows like The Powerpuff Girls and Teen Titans to voice the main female hero. It also got mixed reviews, but it was one of my personal favorite games of that year, even with its clunky controls. A few weeks ago, we got Killer Is Dead, another action game from Suda 51. You can probably tell how the reviews went so I won't mention them here. Personally, I really liked Killer Is Dead, but it does have its issues. Suda 51 has worked on other games with his company, like Sin Mora and a game based off Blood+, but I just thought I'd give the viewers/readers a quick CliffNotes version of the games he and his company worked on that are well-known among the gaming community.

Samurai Champloo Music

This Monday I thought I would share with you guys some awesome music from the anime series Samurai Champloo. If you guys haven't checked out this series then I highly recommend that you do. It has great characters, action, adventure, comedy and just an all around great story. As for the music, it is definitely unique to this series. It very much has a jazzy, hip hop sound that is mainly influenced by the late Japanese hip hop producer and DJ Nujabes.

Now for those of you that know me, you know that I joy all different types of music. You name a genre and I can most likely find at least a few songs that I would really like in it. I'm saying all this because I know that people can be very touchy when it comes to their music. A lot of people can be very close minded to experiencing music even though it is so universal. I really believe that music is not only meant to be heard but also felt. Music can make you feel emotions that no words or images could ever make you feel. I understand that not every one is into this type of music but I encourage you to give it a listen anyways.

August Rush

As the dog days of summer fall further behind me, I almost always find myself reflecting upon thoughts, feelings, and actions at this time of the year. It's hard for me to articulate, but I get a little sad when it comes time for the inevitable change of the seasons. I won't hesitate to admit that I rather enjoy all of the hustle and bustle of the warm spring/summer weather. People go places, do things, and everything just seems to come to life. Even with the egregiously hot temperatures of late, I simply love all the energy that the summertide brings. When it all comes to (what almost always feels like) an abrupt end, I can't help but get this sinking sensation of finality for one reason or another.

With that said, it seems like it's been forever and a day since my last blog post. For those who may be wondering where I went, the vast bulk of my 2013 convention schedule was in August. I literally had one convention right after the other for three consecutive weeks (with only a handful of days between them all) so to say the least, it was very much an eventful month for your's truly. Ranging from moments of amazing fun to instances of downright tragedy, I can say that I'm glad to be home in one piece, and ready to get back in the saddle.

Single of the Week: Shiki No Uta by MINMI (Samurai Champloo ED)

REMINDER:is an array of periodicals here at CB Nonsense where I choose an anime song of my choice, every week, and offer you a brief overview about the song, the artist, and maybe even a bit of insight on the anime as a whole. I love music. And here is a peak at my varied playlist.

Samurai Champloo is an anime that is well known for its urban atmosphere and freestyle nature. And I'm not just referring to the animation and the music. These factors are carried out from the characters, to the story, all the way to the dialogue and character designs. Everything about this series spells out the meaning of "cool." And I honestly have no other way to describe it. However, my favorite aspect of the show is definitely the music.

Since a young age, I grew up listening to a diversity of music. From rock, to pop, to hip-hop, and r&b, I've never been one to settle with just one genre. I even listen to country. Plus, I speak two languages and that adds a little more flavor to my playlists and elongates my list of favorite artists. But, considering that I also listen to Japanese and Korean music, due to the amount of time I spend within the anime community, I can never fully appreciate any of their songs because of the language barrier.

Otakon 2013 Time

Once again I'll be attending Otakon this year, from August 9th to the 11th. This time it's their 20th Anniversary, and they've pulled out all the stops with amazing guests such as Watanabe Shinichirou (director of Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Kids on the Slope) and Kanno Yohko (composer for Turn A Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Kids on the Slope, Aquarion, and many many other shows).

I won't be doing any panels this year but I'll be wearing the above image in my badgeholder. If you know me or recognize me, I'm always open to talking Genshiken.

A Samurai Champloo Review: Son of a Battle Cry

Samurai Champloo is a lesson in contrasts. 'Champloo' roughly translates to 'mash-up' in old Okinawan dialect - and nothing could be more of a mixture than ancient Japanese samurai legend meeting the 1990s American hip-hop scene. While it may seem an incongruous or even appropriative blend, director Shinichiro Watanabe pulls the "mash-up" off with finesse, flavour and a sense of fun - just like he did with space-opera meets blues in his previous work, Cowboy Bebop.

Samurai Champloo introduces us to three distinct personalities. Jin is a ronin (or wandering samurai) with a mysterious air of sophistication in his manners as well as in his fighting skills; while Mugen is a violent foul-mouthed womanizer with incredible strength but erratic use of it; and Fuu is a ditzy but well-meaning waitress. Jin and Mugen clash like fire and water, leading much of the show's conflict and action, but it's Fuu, who they pick up on their travels, giving the series a sense of direction: enlisting the duo to help her find "the man who smells like sunflowers".

Theories: Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo

So Cowboy Bebop, known as the all time classic anime, placed on many people's top 10 lists, has this thing I'm looking for. I can't name what this thing is, all I can call it is "The IT factor". Its got beautiful animation, music, atmosphere, and has made many manly men desire Spike's badassery/coolness, or just desiring after Spike himself. What is this "IT" factor? I tried to make a list that compiles the formula for the awesomeness of Cowboy Bebop. Let's use a math equation! Western + Outer Space + Jazz/Bebop + Film Noir + Martial Arts + Gun Fu John Woo influence =

So to boil it all down, the formula is this:

2004, Part 2: Respectful, Yet Rebellious

Over 130 new anime shows debuted in 2004 on Japanese television, a number in magnitude that would be the norm for the next decade. Naturally, George J. Horvath from needed just a little more space for his coverage on what shows made 2004 what it was. If you need a refresher on the first half, click .It could have been easy to give a simple mention of each of these titles and get this year covered in one post, but as the essay titles indicated this year had to be covered in more detail, respecting the reader and the blog while also bucking tradition and giving more. Luckily, the latter half of 2004 felt the same way...

Being a visual medium anime has to do something to really catch viewers' interests at times and while the year had a few worthy contenders, like Windy Tales and Tweeny Witches, no anime from 2004 did that as well as GANKUTSUOU-THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Based on the legendary novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, Gonzo took the story and put it a new spin on it, while also giving the entire show a look that, to this day, is still one-of-a-kind.

Voice Actor

Among his credits include the voice of Spike Spiegel in the anime show Cowboy Bebop and Mugen in Samurai Champloo. He voiced Roger Smith from The Big O, Orochimaru and Zabuza in the Naruto anime, X-Men's Wolverine in numerous games, as well as in the animated series Wolverine and the X-Men, the animated movie Hulk Vs, The Super Hero Squad Show and Marvel Anime: X-Men. He also provided the video game voice of Jack Cayman, the main character of MadWorld, Tank Dempsey, the comic relief of Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops zombie modes, Professor Galvez in Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, and Grayson Hunt, the main protagonist of Bulletstorm and Gorim, Oghren, and First Enchanter Irving in the 2009 video game Dragon Age: Origins.

In September 2000, Blum voiced the role of TOM, the robotic host of Toonami shown on Cartoon Network (replacing Sonny Strait), as the second through 4th incarnations of the character right up to the block's cancellation on September 20, 2008 delivering the final lines uttered on the block, echoing his early role of Cowboy Bebop's Spike Spiegel, to recent revival of the block on May 26, 2012. He is also the voice of Amon in The Legend of Korra and 7-Eleven's "Oh Thank Heaven" television and radio advertisements and for his work with Vic Mignogna in a scratch-made sound bite series parodying Anheuser-Busch's "Real Men of Genius" radio ad campaign, titled "Real Fans of Genius". Revealed by Blind Ferret Entertainment on November 15, 2012, it was announced that Blum will be playing Harry, "the Homeless Bum," in Least I Could Do: The Animated Series.
ETA: Oh! Almost forgot to mention this! Happy 10,000 pageviews, Psa 139! I know it's not a lot compared to most sites, but it's kinda cool to me :) I'm almost right at the number tonight. Also, this is my 498th post, so 2 more and I'll have to post like a celebratory something or something for the 500th. /ETA

Con Recap: A-kon 2013 Dallas

I haven't been to a con since Gen-Con 2004. Gen-Con 2004 was the last Dragonball GT card game tournament and the last con I went to. At the time I was about to transfer colleges and was finally ready to get back to school and pursue my B.S. and the end of the card game was all but imminent.

Fast forward to 2013 and I have already been thinking of taking Cosmic Rage to cons to promote the project. However, I had no idea what to expect at cons or Artist Alley for that matter. So after I discovered that Anime Detour in Minneapolis limits their tickets, I set my sights on the Lone Star state and what A-kon had to offer.

AFA12 Signature Acquisitions

Yup, 'signature' as in 'autograph', not 'outstanding'.

I'm unequivocally late in posting these, but as the adage goes, "It's better late than never!". So, here are some of the signatures that I was fortunate enough to acquire at last year's Anime Festival Asia 2012.

What will we be up to next week?

We found an apartment! A student apartment 5 minutes away from my aunt and uncle's house by bike. Also about 10 minutes from the center of town. We rode our bikes there today and took a look. I can't wait to move in and get comfy in our new home!! We go sign the contract tomorrow morning and get the keys! I'm also going to register for school tomorrow after the apartment stuff. We have to go change our address at the Maistraatti, talk to the power people, and go by social services to fill out paperwork to receive housing support money. On Tuesday we're going on a little trip to Kemi police station to get a ID card and maybe swing by Ikea and have lunch. Wednesday we might move more stuff into our place, and then Thursday we're going to Eno for a week. I can't wait to see my Suki-baby!!!

I got a library card last week and we went to the library to borrow a few books on Friday. I have been reading 2 books. One is called The Dying Animal by Phillip Roth. It's about a college professor who has affairs with his students at the end of the year. He falls for a Cuban student named Consuela, and the story tells about his experience with this. The other book is called Scar Night by Alan Campbell. It's about a city that hangs over an abyss suspended by chains, and a 12 year old Angel that has to protect the city. Both books are a bit weird. I'm gonna be finishing The Dying Animal soon, and may not even finish Scar Night. We will be going back to the library Monday night to get more books. Adrian is also reading...which is a huge surprise, as he always says he hates reading. I'm glad he got a book though, now he seems eager to finish it and get another one.

(Watanabe x 2) + Kanno

I now am adding two more anime to the recommended titles listings. Both directed by Watanabe Shinichiro, one with arrangements and original music by Kanno Yoko.

When I sat down to watch Kids on the Slope last week I had my dinner and planned to only view the first episode. After the eighth episode I decided it was time to get to bed. This is an interesting drama about three high school students and set in Kyushu. You really don't know when as the show starts but there are clues set throughout the series, things that are there and things that are not there. For Japanese some of these would be obvious but for non-Japanese they are not, eventually you see a calendar. Don't worry too much about the time period, just enjoy the series and the great music.

Samurai Champloo Review

SERIES: Samurai ChamplooGENRE: ActionSUMMARY:Mugen's a buck wild warrior - violent, thoughtless and womanizing. Jin is a vagrant ronin - mysterious, traditional, well-mannered and very strong as well. These two fiercely independent warriors can`t be any more different from one another, yet their paths cross when Fuu, a ditzy waitress, saves them from being executed when they are arrested after a violent swordfight. Fuu convinces the two vagrant young men to help her find a mysterious samurai "who smells of sunflowers." And their journey begins. This is a story about love, friendship and courage... NOT!

What initially attracted me to Samurai Champloo was the fact that Nujabes had composed most of the OST. But when from the moment I watched the first episode of Samurai Champloo, I knew that it was different, a very good kind of different. From the funky hip hop thematics to the fluid, thick, black line animation, Samurai Champloo became more to me than an anime with a good soundtrack.

Attack on Titan Is Pretty Good

I stopped watching anime in my late teens/early twenties. Somewhere around that age, I figured out that anime has a ton of repeated tropes and cliches from which the genre is built. Figuring out these tropes was once exciting and new, but just like RomComs, once I knew the formula, the content lost it's luster. And while the animation is impressive, after a while, most anime begins to look like carbon copies of each other.Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to poopoo on anime because there are plenty of anime series and movies that I have fond memories of watching (if a may name a few: Ninja Scroll, Samurai Champloo, Dragon Ball Z, and Berserk). But I'm skeptical when anyone recommends that I watch an anime.

I recently read an article onthat piqued my interest about an anime titled Attack on Titan. The article does a pretty good job of discussing the strengths and weakness of the show. Ultimately, I gave it a chance. And, as my title suggests, I found the showentertaining enough to watch all twelve of the listed episodes (you can find it on and ).
